The Power of Scent: Romance and Nostalgia

The Power of Scent: Romance and Nostalgia

There’s something quietly magical about scent. It reaches deep into the memory and heart, unearthing forgotten moments, old dreams, and sacred feelings with just a breath. Scent, to me, has always held a kind of spiritual weight - a way of grounding myself in the present while also connecting to what once was.

When I began dreaming up my new fragrance line, Maison de Fleurs, I wanted it to be more than just perfume. I wanted it to be a portal - into a garden you once walked through, a rainy day you never wanted to end, a quiet morning cup of tea. Each scent was inspired not only by nature but by deeply personal memories, feelings, and rituals.

Roses: A Spiritual Love Story

My lifelong love affair with roses is well known to anyone close to me. There’s something almost otherworldly about their scent -  sweet, classic, and full of mystery. I feel deeply connected to the rose, almost spiritually, as though it carries centuries of wisdom within its petals. When I’m tending to them in my garden or blending their notes into my fragrances, I feel like I’m tapping into something sacred.

It’s no surprise that roses feature heavily in Maison de Fleurs - I wanted them to speak of romance, of softness, of timeless beauty.

Rain and Scotland: Memory in Every Drop

Then there’s the scent of rain - fresh, earthy, and impossible to bottle. It takes me straight back to my time in Scotland, where it rained nearly every day. But I didn’t mind it one bit. In fact, the rain became part of the landscape of our experience - cosy pubs, rolling green hills, and that soft, damp air that made everything feel slower and more meaningful. Every time I catch the scent of rain in the garden or after a summer storm, I’m transported there.

This memory became the heart of one of my more ethereal blends - a rain-kissed fragrance laced with mint, rose, and lavender.

Lavender: The Gentle Healer

Lavender is my anchor. It’s the scent I reach for when my head aches or when anxiety looms. There’s a gentleness in lavender that feels like a deep breath for the soul. I grow it in my garden, dry it for wands, and infuse it into everything from mists to candles. It’s no surprise that this humble flower made its way into Maison de Fleurs - a grounding presence among the florals.

Tea and the Ritual of Stillness

Lately, one of my favourite ways to unwind is with a warm cup of chamomile tea. I like to steep the flowers until golden, then stir in a spoonful of honey, a splash of milk, a drop of vanilla extract, and a pinch of cinnamon. It’s like wrapping yourself in a soft blanket from the inside out - soothing, floral, and gently sweet.

Here’s the full recipe if you’d like to try it:

Chamomile Honey Latte

Ingredients:

- 1 chamomile tea bag (or 1 tbsp dried chamomile flowers)

- 1/2 cup boiling water

- 1/2 cup milk of choice (dairy, oat, almond, etc.)

- 1–2 tsp honey (to taste)

- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

- A pinch of ground cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. Steep the chamomile tea in boiling water for 5–7 minutes.
  2. Warm the milk on the stove or in a milk frother until hot (but not boiling).
  3. Stir the honey, vanilla, and cinnamon into the tea.
  4. Pour in the warm milk, stir gently, and sip slowly.

With Maison de Fleurs, my hope is that every bottle becomes a tiny story - a trace of something beloved, whether remembered or yet to be discovered.

Because scent is more than fragrance.

It’s memory.

It’s romance.

It’s home.

With love and wildflowers,

Kels x
